Ambar brings Balkan cuisine to the heart of Chicago, offering a unique all-you-can-eat dining experience in River North. I visited on a Thursday evening to experience both the food and the lively patio scene.

To start, I ordered the Plum cocktail made with mezcal, vanilla-infused plum rakia, ginger, pineapple, and lime. The drink balanced smoky, citrusy, and slightly savory flavors, making it a refreshing and well-rounded cocktail.

The highlight of the meal was the Balkan dip sampler, served with fresh pita and a variety of spreads including spicy feta, clotted cream, white bean hummus, roasted red pepper spread, beet tzatziki, and marinated olives with pickled vegetables.

Each dip offered something different, from creamy and rich to bright and tangy. The spicy feta and roasted red pepper spread stood out most, delivering bold flavor and pairing perfectly with the warm pita.

The all-you-can-eat menu allows you to try a wide range of small plates. The Balkan kebabs were juicy and flavorful, served alongside more of the spicy feta for added richness. The steak tartare, paired with a spicy tomato pesto, was especially enjoyable when scooped onto pita from the dip platter. Additional dishes included corn ribs, croquettes, and grilled shrimp, which added lighter, more balanced flavors to complement the richer meat dishes.

To finish the meal, we ordered the brownie skillet. It arrived with crispy edges and a gooey center, making it a classic, satisfying dessert to share.
