Chef’s Special Cocktail Bar is one of the most popular restaurants in Chicago, known for its inventive dishes, bold flavors, and notoriously difficult reservations. The experience blends elevated comfort food with Sichuan-inspired heat and classic Chinese-American favorites, making it one of the most talked-about dining spots in the city.

The meal began with Crab Rangoon and Wontons in Chili Oil. Both appetizers were flavorful and well-balanced, offering two distinct flavor profiles. The Crab Rangoon leaned rich and creamy, while the wontons stood out more—especially with the chili oil, which added a subtle heat.

Two of the strongest dishes of the evening were recommended by our server: the Dan Dan Noodles and Wok-Tossed Green Beans with Garlic. The Dan Dan Noodles featured ground pork, thick egg noodles, sesame paste, peanuts, and Sichuan peppercorn. The sauce was exceptionally creamy with layered spice that made it one of the most memorable dishes of the night. The Wok-Tossed Green Beans delivered a simpler but equally addictive profile—smoky, garlicky, and perfectly charred.

The main course included Walnut Shrimp, Orange Chicken, and Dry Chili Chicken, creating a balanced mix of sweet, savory, and spicy dishes. The Walnut Shrimp was creamy and slightly sweet, while the Orange Chicken offered a familiar, tangy profile. The Dry Chili Chicken stood out most at the table—crispy and layered with heat that remained flavorful rather than overpowering.

The Combo Fried Rice included pork, shrimp, egg, peas, carrots, and sesame oil. It worked as the perfect complement to the richer and spicier dishes, rounding out the meal with a classic, comforting base.
