Akiro Hand Roll Bar is one of the newer additions to River North, offering a modern mix of Japanese and Peruvian flavors.

We started with the Tuna Tiradito, made with yellowfin akimi, ponzu, and furikake. This was the perfect way to set the tone for the meal. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the bright, citrusy flavors from the ponzu made the dish feel light, clean, and beautifully balanced.

Next, we tried the Tempura Shrimp, served in a spicy sauce. I loved the combination of textures in this dish—the shrimp had the perfect crisp, which paired so well with the tiradito we had just enjoyed.

For the hand rolls, I went with the 4 Hand Roll Set from the menu:

  • Salmon

  • Tuna

  • Ebi Furai

  • Toro

All of the rolls were fresh and flavorful, but the tuna options were the standout for me—rich, buttery, and perfectly seasoned.

Akiro Hand Roll Bar is an incredible spot for fresh seafood, hand rolls, and a lively dining atmosphere in Chicago. It was busy even on a weekday, and I can definitely see why. I’m already looking forward to going back and trying more of the menu.
